4 tips I wish I knew before starting a blog

Hello Jewels,

Already, I get so many people asking me, “how did you start your blog” and “how do you make money off it” ???. And yes, you can make loads of money off blogging, you just have to know a few things most bloggers will never tell you. Trust me, I learnt that one the hard way. So the tips I have for you today have extremely helped me through my journey, but these tips are not set inn stone. They might not be what might work for your niche, but it’s worth a try. I have never had any regrets when it comes to starting a blog, but I only wish someone told me.

Don’t expect too much

When I started my blog, I really had super high hopes. I was expecting to go viral after my first or second post, which obviously was not going to happen soon. I expected brands to be trooping at my ‘doorstep’ for collaborations and sponsorship deals. This wasn’t a very realistic approach and I ended up getting disappointed and stressed when this wasn’t happening. I started to feel like I wasn’t putting in enough.

Tip

You just started – Give yourself a break – Give people a break. For all you know, they are not aware you exist. I learnt that, it’s always best to  let things take their natural course. Do what you have to and  let God do the rest. Be patient with yourself and have fun blogging always.

Be consistent.

This tip is incredibly important. Blogging may just be your hobby and that’s totally fine, or you would like to take up a career in blogging and start a magazine of some sort. The only way you can achieve this is by putting in that extra effort and being consistent. This can be hard work, especially for those of us still in school or a 9-5 job. But nothing pays of quite like being consistent. So come up with a system that would make you more consistent at blogging. I wasn’t going by my own tips back in the day, and I still struggle greatly, when it comes to scheduling posts. But, if only I had known its important, I would have definitely put in a lot more effort.

Tip

Make sure you’re always posting relevant content, Content that is going to have impact positively on someones life. Give them a reason to keep coming back to your website. Let it flow naturally for you. Learn how to schedule posts during your free time, so that, whenever you’re extremely busy, your blog won’t feel it. If you’re also short on inspiration, visit pinterest, instagram, twitter or take a look at your search queries in Google Analytics to see what topics people are most interested in and jot them down and create new post topics related to them and voila 🙂 This is a tip I learnt from bloggerboss

Make Friends

This is the core of all succeeding blogs and the basis of life. Making friends with other bloggers and getting you in connection with like minded people such as yourself is extremely important. You can discuss or bounce your ideas off of them. It’s instrumental to your growth process. You can exchange experiences and learn new things each and every time. So making friends with other bloggers is something I really cherish now as a blogger. When you start joining forces for collaborations and the likes, it helps you promote your blog by sharing your audience.

Tip

Don’t be ashamed to send a collaboration email, a blog comment or even a shout out on social media. Let people know you what you’re doing and let them know where you are. Make it a habit to just comment on peoples blogs, even if you don’t feel like blogging. If you’re really authentic you’ll have a more positive response.

Lazy day to do-list

There are some days you just do not feel like blog work. The creative block kind of days. I would seldom watch a movies or chat all night long about unnecessary things or just faff around until i am tired. I would also sleep or do something even less productive. Creating a to-do-list for your lazy days help you to stay active and productive even when you don’t want to.

Tip

Spend time growing your social media pages and building your relationships with your audience. You can also spend this time visiting and reading blogs you love. You can create a very detailed media-kit for your blog to prepare yourself. Most brands want to see your media-kit and portfolio of other brands you have worked with in the past. Invest some time in making it available on request. You could also work on your old blog posts, delete old images and posts if you feel the need to and update your site to keep it running effectively. Make sure you use this time to develop yourself in one way or another.

Once again, thank you for coming and I hope you learnt something that can help you improve your blogging skills. We need more bloggers, so please leave a comment and let people know what your doing on your blog and how it’s helping you. Join the family.

Awesome tips. I like the one of creating a media kit. I got to know about that lately and I’m trying to create one. I also love the collaboration part and getting brands to work with. Blogging is an adorable career that calls for alot. It can be exhausting sometimes but I don’t regret my decision to blog.

BTW, my blog is a lifestyle blog for young entrepreneurs… And I love your blog. You should totally do an instagram video pronouncing the name of your blog for my sake…. Pleaaaase.

I love all the points you presented, Its important to cut ourselves some slack, be consistent and reach out to other bloggers. Now while I think it is important to let things take it’s course and let people discover your, it is also important to promote promote and promote yourself some more.
